Microgel Pillows in Canada (2026): What Microgel Is, How It Compares With Down, and What They Cost
"Microgel" is in the name of pillows sold by Costco, Linen Chest, Brunelli, QE Home and Hamuq, and Canadian Down & Feather sells a similar "gel microfiber" pillow, but none of those pages explains the word the same way. We read each seller's own product page on October 15, 2026, put their fill descriptions side by side, priced the pillows by size, and compared their care labels, so you can tell what you are buying before you choose one.
AI Overview answer
What is a microgel pillow?
Quick answer: A microgel pillow is filled with a very fine synthetic fibre, usually polyester, that is made to feel like down. Despite the name, the sellers that state what the fill is describe a fibre, not a gel insert or a block of foam. Costco's Roots Home Microgel Pillow lists "100% polyester fill", Canadian Down & Feather calls its gel microfibre fill "a high quality polyester that's meant to mimic the softness of down", and Otelia, a Canadian hotel bedding supplier, describes microgel as "an ultra-fine synthetic fiber, usually made of polyester". On October 15, 2026, microgel pillows from the four sellers we priced by size ran from $36.99 for a Costco queen two-pack (about $18.50 a pillow) to $89 for a Hamuq king. Most can go in a home washing machine, but each seller's care label differs, so read it before you wash.
Decide in four questions
Four questions before you buy a microgel pillow
1. Do you want a down-like feel without feathers?
That is what sellers say microgel is designed for. If you want a pillow that keeps one fixed shape, look at foam instead. See how the fills compare.
2. Will you wash the whole pillow?
The care labels we read allow machine washing, but the water temperature and drying instructions differ. See the care labels.
3. How high should it be?
Loft depends on how you sleep and on your mattress. Our pillow loft guide gives heights by sleep position.
4. Will it fit your pillowcase?
Pillow size names are not the same at every store. Costco's microgel "queen" is 45 x 66 cm. Check the stated dimensions, not just the name. See the price table.
What is microgel made of?
Microgel is a product name, not a material standard. None of the pages we read cites a standard that defines it, so the reliable way to know what is inside is the fill line on the seller's page or on the pillow's label. Across the sellers we read, that line points to polyester fibre:
- Costco, Roots Home Microgel Pillow: "100% polyester fill", with a 300 thread count cotton sateen shell.
- Canadian Down & Feather, Gel Microfiber Down Alternative Pillow: "This pillow is made with microfiber fill", described as "a high quality polyester that's meant to mimic the softness of down".
- Otelia, which supplies hotel bedding in Canada, explains on its blog that microgel is "an ultra-fine synthetic fiber, usually made of polyester, designed to mimic the lightness and softness of natural down", is "often categorized as a microfiber", and that the fibres are "sometimes siliconized".
The practical meaning: a microgel pillow is a down-alternative pillow filled with very fine polyester fibre. The word "gel" does not mean a cooling gel layer on any of the pages we read; if a pillow does have one, the seller will describe it separately.
How do sellers in Canada describe their microgel fill?
Here is each seller's own wording, quoted from its product page on October 15, 2026. Read it as the seller's description, not as a test result.
| Seller and pillow | Fill, in the seller's words | Shell |
|---|---|---|
| Hamuq MicroGel Pillow | "Microgel cotton filling" | Not stated on the product page |
| Costco, Roots Home Microgel Pillow (2-pack) | "100% polyester fill" | 100% cotton sateen, 300 thread count |
| Canadian Down & Feather, Gel Microfiber Down Alternative Pillow | "microfiber fill", "a high quality polyester" | Cotton, 300 thread count |
| Brunelli, Deluxe Microgel Pillow | "microgel filling technology" | "breathable cotton cover" |
| Linen Chest, Down Alternative Microgel Pillow | "a synthetic fibre fill that mimics down's softness" | 100% cotton, 250 thread count |
| QE Home, Advanta Microgel Pillow | "Medium-firm" microgel fill | Cotton and TENCEL Lyocell blend |
Hamuq's wording is the least specific in the table: its page says "microgel cotton filling" and does not give a fibre content percentage. If the exact fibre matters to you, ask the seller for the content stated on the pillow's label before you buy.
How much does a microgel pillow cost in Canada?
We recorded the price of each size exactly as the seller listed it on October 15, 2026. Size names are the sellers' own; only Costco states dimensions, so compare sizes before you compare prices. Canadian Down & Feather sells its pillow as "gel microfiber" rather than "microgel"; it is included because its page describes the same kind of fine polyester fill.
| Pillow | Standard | Queen | King | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hamuq MicroGel Pillow | $79 | Not offered | $89 | Free shipping and free returns in Canada and the US; 3-year limited pillow warranty |
| Costco, Roots Home Microgel Pillow | Not offered | $36.99 for two | $39.99 for two ($20.00 each) | Online price; Costco notes warehouse pricing may vary. The king showed out of stock in the availability panel we read |
| Canadian Down & Feather, Gel Microfiber Down Alternative (Medium) | $55 | $60 | $70 | Single pillow |
| Brunelli, Deluxe Microgel Pillow | Not offered | $53 | $60 | Single pillow |
Two sellers are left out of the price table on purpose. Linen Chest showed $39.95 with a sale price of $14.95 ("62% off") without stating the size on the page we read, and QE Home showed "From $39.99" without a price for each size. Without the size, a price cannot be compared fairly.
Costco is the only seller in the table that states dimensions: its microgel "queen" measures 45 x 66 cm (18 x 26 in) and its king 45 x 86 cm (18 x 34 in). Size names are not standard from one store to the next, so measure your pillowcase and ask for the dimensions before you compare prices.
Is microgel better than down?
It is different, and the sellers' own descriptions explain how:
- Feel: sellers design microgel to imitate down's softness. Canadian Down & Feather says microfibre "is denser than down, so while microfiber pillows are still soft, they're able to provide a bit more support than down pillows."
- Moisture and washing: the same seller notes that "Natural down and feather are quite sensitive to moisture, but polyester is not!", and says its polyester pillow can be machine washed at home.
- Price: the microgel pillows above cost about $18.50 to $89 each. For down and down-alternative bedding compared side by side, see our down versus down alternative guide, which explains the same fill choice for duvets.
- Shape: a fibre pillow can be fluffed and moved around inside its case, while a solid foam pillow keeps one shape. Our best pillow guide compares fibre, down, feather and foam pillows sold in Canada.
How firm is a microgel pillow?
Firmness comes from how much fibre is inside and how thick that fibre is, not from the word microgel. Otelia names two numbers to look for:
- Fibre thickness (denier): "An index such as 1.2D (D = denier) is sometimes used to indicate fiber thickness. The higher the number, the thicker the fibers, which typically results in a firmer pillow."
- Total pillow weight: "At equal dimensions, a heavier pillow contains more filling, meaning higher density. This usually translates into firmer support."
Few retail pages publish either number. Costco is the exception among the pages we read: its Roots Home microgel queen holds 850 g (30 oz) of fill and its king 1,077 g (38 oz). QE Home describes its Advanta fill as "medium-firm" and Canadian Down & Feather sells its gel microfibre pillow in a "Medium" version. If a seller publishes neither the fill weight nor a firmness level, ask before you buy, and check the return terms.
Can you wash a microgel pillow?
Yes, the care instructions we read allow machine washing, but they are not the same:
| Pillow | Wash | Dry |
|---|---|---|
| Hamuq MicroGel Pillow | "Wash on warm with a mild detergent on the gentle cycle. Run the rinse cycle twice." | "Tumble dry low with dryer balls (tennis balls)." |
| Costco, Roots Home Microgel Pillow | Machine wash, cold water | Tumble dry, low heat |
| Canadian Down & Feather, Gel Microfiber | Machine wash at home "given your machine is quite large" | Low heat |
What the three labels share is a machine wash and a low dryer setting, and Canadian Down & Feather adds that your machine should be large enough for the pillow. Our guide to washing pillows covers drying and the common mistakes, and how often to replace a pillow covers when washing no longer helps.
How do you choose a microgel pillow?
- Start with height. The right loft depends on how you sleep, and our pillow loft guide gives heights in inches and centimetres for each sleep position.
- Compare the fill line, not the name. Look for the fibre content, and the fill weight or firmness if the seller publishes them.
- Compare sizes by dimensions. Size names differ between stores, and only one seller in this guide published measurements.
- Read the care label before you pay. If you plan to wash the pillow often, check the water temperature and drying rules.
- Check the return terms. Pillows are personal. Linen Chest showed a "30-Day Return Policy" on its page; Hamuq offers free returns in Canada and the US. Return rules for the other pillows were not read for this guide, so ask before you buy.
Hamuq product context
Where the Hamuq MicroGel Pillow fits
Hamuq publishes this guide and sells one of the pillows in it, so we have an interest in the comparison.

Microgel questions
Microgel pillow FAQs
What it is
What is a microgel pillow made of?
Quick answer: A very fine synthetic fibre, usually polyester, made to feel like down; Costco's Roots Home Microgel Pillow lists "100% polyester fill" and Canadian Down & Feather describes its gel microfibre fill as polyester.
Is a microgel pillow the same as a gel memory foam pillow?
Quick answer: No; the microgel pillows we read are fibre-filled down alternatives that can be fluffed and machine washed, while a gel memory foam pillow is a block or shreds of foam, which its seller will describe as foam.
Is microgel better than down?
Quick answer: It is a different trade-off: sellers design microgel to imitate down's softness, Canadian Down & Feather says microfibre is denser than down and gives a bit more support, and polyester tolerates moisture and home washing better than down and feather.
Buying and care
How much does a microgel pillow cost in Canada?
Quick answer: On October 15, 2026 the microgel pillows we priced by size ran from $36.99 for a Costco Roots Home queen two-pack (about $18.50 a pillow) to $89 for a Hamuq king, with Brunelli at $53 to $60 and Canadian Down & Feather at $55 to $70.
Can you put a microgel pillow in the washing machine?
Quick answer: The care instructions we read allow it, with differences: Hamuq says warm water on the gentle cycle and two rinses, Costco says cold water, and both say tumble dry on low; follow the label on your own pillow.
Are microgel pillows good?
Quick answer: They suit sleepers who want a soft, down-like fill they can wash at home: the sellers we read describe a fine polyester fibre made to mimic down, Canadian Down & Feather says it is denser than down with a bit more support, and polyester copes with moisture better than down; the name alone tells you nothing about cooling or firmness, so compare the fill weight, the size and the return terms.
How we know this
Every price, size, fill description, care instruction and return term in this guide was read on October 15, 2026 from the sellers' own product pages: Costco (Roots Home Microgel Pillow, 2-pack), Canadian Down & Feather (Gel Microfiber Down Alternative Pillow), Brunelli (Deluxe Microgel Pillow), Linen Chest (Down Alternative Microgel Pillow), QE Home (Advanta Microgel Pillow) and Hamuq (MicroGel Pillow, FAQ). The definition and the two firmness measures come from Otelia's article on microgel filling. We did not test, sleep on or wash these pillows, and we make no health, allergy or temperature claim for any of them. Prices and stock change; check the linked pages before you buy.
