The ownership map in one table

If you have been comparing Canadian mattresses, you have probably shortlisted three or four names that feel like separate companies competing with each other. Here is who actually owns them.

Ten of the eleven brands in that table belong to two owners. That is not a scandal and it is not hidden. Consolidation is normal in retail, and both companies disclose it. But almost nobody comparing mattresses knows it, because the brands are marketed as if they compete.

GoodMorning.com, and the two review sites

GoodMorning.com Inc is registered at 900 to 9707 110 Street NW, Edmonton, Alberta T5K 2L9. That address appears in the footer of each of its brand websites.

The part worth knowing is not the brand portfolio. It is that the same company publishes two mattress review websites.

Both sites rank the same three brands in the same order

To be fair about what this is and is not. GoodMorning publishes the disclosure openly, which is more than many review sites do. Its mattresses may genuinely be good, and a 9.9 is not evidence of anything false. The company is not hiding.

But if you are researching Canadian mattresses and two of the review sites you land on are published by the manufacturer of the top three results, you should know that before you weigh those scores. That is the entire point of this page.

Sleep Country, and who bought Sleep Country

The other half of the market consolidated through acquisitions, all publicly announced.

Endy, November 2018

Sleep Country Canada announced on 29 November 2018 that it had agreed to acquire substantially all of the assets of Endy for $88.7 million, made up of $63.7 million in cash at closing and up to $25 million more based on performance targets. Silk & Snow, January 2023

Sleep Country closed its acquisition of Silk & Snow on 4 January 2023 for approximately $24.0 million in cash at closing, with up to a further $19.45 million payable in early 2026 subject to performance. In the same release Sleep Country described its banners as Sleep Country Canada, Dormez-vous, Endy and Hush. Our comparison against Silk & Snow is in Hamuq vs Silk & Snow.

And then Sleep Country itself, October 2024

On 22 July 2024 Sleep Country announced it would be acquired by Fairfax Financial Holdings. The take-private completed on 2 October 2024 at $35.00 per share in cash, valuing the company at approximately $1.7 billion CAD. Sleep Country was delisted from the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Why this matters when you are comparing

Three practical consequences, and none of them require assuming bad faith from anyone.

1. Your shortlist may be narrower than you think

A shortlist of Douglas, Logan & Cove and Juno is one company. A shortlist of Endy and Silk & Snow is one company. If you wanted three independent opinions and picked three brands from the same owner, you did not get what you were shopping for.

2. Reviews are not automatically independent

Read the footer and the about page of any mattress review site before you weigh its scores. The good ones disclose their relationships. Two of the most visible Canadian ones disclose being owned by a manufacturer, and you have to actually read it to find out.

3. Ownership does not tell you the mattress is worse

This is the part we will not overstate. Being owned by a large company can mean better warranty service, more stable supply and easier returns. How to check who owns any Canadian company yourself

You should not have to take our word for any of this, and you do not have to. Canada publishes the registries. Here is exactly where to look, in the order that works.

Step 1: search the federal corporations database

Corporations Canada, run by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, maintains a free searchable database of every corporation created under the Canada Business Corporations Act. Search a company name at the federal corporation search and you get its registered status, corporation number and registered office address.

One limitation worth knowing: this database covers federally incorporated companies only. It does not include companies incorporated provincially, nor financial institutions and insurance companies, which are created under separate legislation.

Step 2: if it is not federal, search the provincial registries

For provincially incorporated companies, use Canada's Business Registries, the multi-jurisdictional service that searches across provincial and territorial registries at once. Many mattress companies are incorporated provincially rather than federally, so this is usually the step that finds them.

Step 3: look for individuals with significant control

Federally incorporated companies must maintain a register of individuals with significant control, meaning the people who actually own or control the company rather than the name on the storefront. Corporations Canada publishes guidance on how to find that information. This is the step that gets past a brand name to a person.

Step 4: read the footer and the about page

The least technical step and often the most productive. Both GoodMorning review sites disclose their ownership in plain English on their own pages. Sleep Country announced every acquisition in a press release. Most of what is on this page came from step 4, not from a registry.

Our own ownership, stated plainly

It would be poor form to publish this page without applying the same standard to ourselves.

Hamuq Inc is privately held. There is no parent company and no holding company. It was founded by Jordan Bedwell, who sold mattresses in his family's retail business before the online mattress category existed, and Nathan Nielson. Between them they brought the first rollable hybrid mattress to market online in Canada.

We do not own a review site. We have never published a mattress review website, we do not operate one under another name, and we do not pay for placement in one.

We sell mattresses, so we are not neutral. This page exists partly because independence is one of the few things we can point to that our larger competitors cannot. That is a commercial motive and you should read this page knowing it. It is also why every ownership claim here is sourced to a press release or the company's own words rather than to our summary of them.

What we do not know. Private companies are not required to publish ownership changes. If any brand in the table above changes hands after 4 August 2026, this page will be out of date until we update it. If you find something here that is wrong, tell us and we will correct it.

Does this apply everywhere in Canada?

Yes. Corporate ownership is a federal and provincial registration matter, not a regional one, so the ownership structures described here are the same whether you are shopping in British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, Nova Scotia or any of the territories. Sleep Country operates its Dormez-vous banner specifically in Quebec, which is the only brand on this page whose availability is province specific.

What does vary by province is which brands you can try in person. Sleep Country operates physical stores across Canada, which means Endy and Silk & Snow can often be tested in a showroom. Who owns Douglas mattress?

Douglas is owned by GoodMorning.com Inc, a company registered at 900 to 9707 110 Street NW, Edmonton, Alberta. The same company owns Juno, Logan & Cove, Octave and Novosbed, previously owned Recore, and owns and operates the review websites mattressreviews.ca and mattress-reviews.com. That ownership is disclosed in the footer of the Douglas website and on both review sites.

Who owns Endy?

No, and it says so. Both mattressreviews.ca and mattress-reviews.com state on their own sites: "We are owned and operated by GoodMorning.com," and both name Douglas, Juno, Logan & Cove and Octave as brands the company owns. Both sites currently rank Douglas first at 9.9 out of 10, Logan & Cove second at 9.7 and Juno third at 9.3. All three are GoodMorning brands.

Which Canadian mattress brands are actually independent?

Fewer than most shoppers expect. Of the brands most commonly compared in Canada, Douglas, Juno, Logan & Cove, Octave and Novosbed belong to GoodMorning.com Inc, while Endy, Silk & Snow, Hush and Dormez-vous belong to Sleep Country Canada, which belongs to Fairfax Financial Holdings.
