Duvet sizing in Canada looks standard until you put a cover on an insert from a different brand and find two inches of empty fabric flapping at the corners. This chart page lists every standard Canadian duvet and cover size in inches and centimetres, explains why brands disagree on the same size label, and shows the overhang math for pairing a duvet with any Canadian mattress size.

In Canada, standard duvet sizes are roughly: Twin 66 x 86 inches, Double 78 x 86 inches, Queen 88 x 90 inches, and King 102 x 90 inches, though real dimensions vary by brand by two to four inches on the same size label. Always match your duvet cover to your insert's measured dimensions, not to your mattress size.

Canadian duvet size chart (insert and cover)

A Canadian duvet is sized well beyond its mattress so the sides drape over the edge of the bed. The chart below shows the most common dimensions sold by Canadian retailers for each size label, alongside the mattress each is designed to cover.

Size Typical duvet insert (in) Typical duvet insert (cm) Fits mattress (in / cm)
Twin 66 x 86 to 68 x 88 168 x 218 to 173 x 224 38 x 75 / 97 x 190
Twin XL 68 x 88 to 68 x 92 173 x 224 to 173 x 234 38 x 80 / 97 x 203
Double / Full 78 x 86 to 78 x 90 198 x 218 to 198 x 229 54 x 75 / 137 x 190
Queen 88 x 90 to 88 x 92 224 x 229 to 224 x 234 60 x 80 / 152 x 203
King 102 x 90 to 104 x 92 259 x 229 to 264 x 234 76 x 80 / 193 x 203
California King 102 x 96 to 108 x 98 259 x 244 to 274 x 249 72 x 84 / 183 x 213

Ranges reflect genuine brand-to-brand variance on the same size label. Many Canadian brands do not cut a separate California King duvet and sell one King / California King size instead.

What size duvet do I need for my bed?

Start from the mattress, not the room. Order the duvet label that matches your mattress size, then size up one label if any of these apply: the mattress is taller than 12 inches, you sleep on a topper, you use a storage or adjustable base, or two people share the bed and pull the covers.

  • Twin and Twin XL. Mattress 38 x 75 in and 38 x 80 in. A Twin duvet runs short on a Twin XL, so take the 88 to 92 inch length rather than the 86 inch one.
  • Double / Full. Mattress 54 x 75 in. This is the tightest drape in the Canadian lineup. If you use a topper or share the bed, go to Queen.
  • Queen. Mattress 60 x 80 in. The safest all-round choice, and the size most Canadian covers are actually cut for.
  • King and California King. Mattress 76 x 80 in and 72 x 84 in. A California King is four inches narrower and four inches longer than a King, so a King duvet works on it but hangs lower at the sides and shorter at the foot.

Why your duvet cover does not fit your insert

Almost every bad fit traces back to one of three causes.

  1. The cover was bought to the mattress size instead of the insert size. A queen cover and a queen insert from two different brands can differ by four inches. Your mattress tells you which duvet to buy; only the insert measurements tell you which cover will fit it.
  2. The two brands round differently. One prints 88 x 90 inches, another prints 224 x 229 cm, a third prints 230 cm. Same bed, three sets of numbers.
  3. Loft eats width. A high-fill baffle-box insert sits taller and draws in at the corners, so a cover that matches on paper can still gap in use.

The rule that works: lay the insert flat, measure it corner to corner, and buy a cover that is the same size up to two inches larger. More than two inches larger and the insert slides around inside; smaller and you crush the loft and lose warmth.

How duvet sizes differ by brand in Canada

Canadian retailers sell into a market fed by both North American and European bedding, and the two systems were never reconciled. A European queen duvet is commonly 240 x 220 cm, which is roughly 94 x 87 inches: wider and shorter than the North American queen at 88 x 90 inches. Brands also oversize on purpose, because two to four extra inches of width is the cheapest way to make a bed look finished.

Treat the size label as a category and the numbers as the specification. If a listing does not publish dimensions in inches or centimetres, that is a reason to skip it rather than a detail to overlook.

Duvet overhang math by mattress size

Overhang is arithmetic: drop per side = (duvet width minus mattress width) divided by two. Aim for a drop that covers your mattress height plus about two inches so the duvet hangs past the bottom edge instead of stopping on it. A 12 inch mattress with a 2 inch topper wants roughly 14 inches per side.

Size Mattress width (in) Typical duvet width (in) Drop per side (in)
Twin 38 66 14
Twin XL 38 68 15
Double / Full 54 78 12
Queen 60 88 14
King 76 102 13
California King 72 102 15

Drop per side calculated from the narrow end of each typical duvet width. Add a size if you want the duvet to cover a deep frame or a storage base.

Two numbers are worth noticing. Double is the tightest size at about 12 inches of drop, which is why couples on a double so often report cold shoulders; sizing up or splitting the bed fixes more sleep complaints than any duvet upgrade. King actually drops less than Queen, because the mattress grows faster than the duvet does. If you want king-sized drape, take the 104 inch width.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard size of a queen duvet in Canada?

A standard Canadian queen duvet typically measures 88 x 90 inches (224 x 229 cm), though premium brands often oversize them to 90 x 92 inches for a fuller drape.

Should a duvet cover be the same size as the insert?

Yes, your duvet cover should ideally be the same size as your insert or up to two inches larger to ensure a snug fit and prevent the insert from shifting.

Does a king duvet fit a queen bed?

Yes, many couples choose a king duvet for a queen bed to get extra overhang and prevent "tugging" during the night, though it may pool on the floor with lower bed frames.

What are queen duvet dimensions in centimetres?

A Canadian queen duvet is usually 224 x 229 cm, which is 88 x 90 inches. Oversized queen inserts run to about 224 x 234 cm (88 x 92 inches).

What size is a king duvet in inches?

A Canadian king duvet is typically 102 x 90 to 104 x 92 inches (259 x 229 to 264 x 234 cm). Take the 104 inch width if you want the same side drape a queen duvet gives.

What size duvet fits a Twin XL?

A Twin XL mattress is 38 x 80 inches, so it needs a duvet around 68 x 88 to 68 x 92 inches (173 x 224 to 173 x 234 cm). A standard Twin duvet at 86 inches long will sit short at the foot.

Are Canadian duvet sizes the same as US duvet sizes?

Canadian and US duvet sizes use the same size labels and the same mattress dimensions, so they are interchangeable. European duvets are not: a European queen is commonly 240 x 220 cm, roughly 94 x 87 inches, which is wider and shorter than the North American queen.

How much bigger than the mattress should a duvet be?

Enough to cover the mattress height plus about two inches on each side. Subtract the mattress width from the duvet width and divide by two: a queen duvet at 88 inches over a 60 inch mattress gives 14 inches of drop per side.
