A compressed mattress arrives in a carton roughly the size of a bar fridge stood on end, and the question behind every search for its dimensions is the same: will it get from the courier's hands to your bedroom? This page provides the actual published carton specs from Hamuq and four other manufacturers, the weight band you should plan for, and the doorway, stairwell, and vehicle clearances that actually determine the answer. If you are still choosing the mattress itself, our guide to the best mattress in Canada covers that side.

A mattress in a box measures roughly 15 to 20 inches square by 43 to 47 inches tall (38 to 51 cm square by 109 to 119 cm tall), and most brands ship every mattress size in the same carton. A queen hybrid box typically weighs 70 to 110 pounds (32 to 50 kg), which is above the 23 kg single-person lift limit used in Canadian safety guidance, so plan for two people.

Hamuq ships both the Original Hybrid and the Organic Hybrid in an 18.5 by 18.5 by 43-inch (47 by 47 by 109 cm) recycled-fibre kraft carton made in Canada, with free shipping and a 120-night risk-free trial.

Mattress in a box dimensions by brand

Mattress cartons cluster tightly between 15 and 20 inches square and 43 to 47 inches tall, because the roll diameter is set by mattress thickness and the carton height is set by the folded mattress width. That is why most brands ship a twin and a king in an identically sized box: the mattress is folded in half lengthwise before rolling, so a 76-inch king and a 38-inch twin both become a roll about 38 to 40 inches long. What changes between sizes is the density of the roll and therefore the weight, not the carton.

Two patterns are worth noting before you measure anything. First, a taller mattress produces a fatter roll, so a 13- or 14-inch hybrid ships in a wider carton than a 10-inch all-foam bed at the same mattress size. Second, some premium hybrids ship in two cartons rather than one, which is heavier overall but far easier to carry because no single box exceeds a comfortable two-person lift.

How much does a mattress in a box weigh?

A boxed queen mattress typically weighs 70 to 110 pounds (32 to 50 kg), with all-foam models at the light end and coil hybrids at the heavy end. A boxed king runs 90 to 140 pounds (41 to 64 kg). The carton itself adds only a few pounds, so almost all of the weight is mattress. Published manufacturer figures give a clear picture of the real spread.

Mattress Size Published shipping weight Metric Carry rating
Tuft & Needle Original, all-foam Queen 72 lb 33 kg Two people
Tuft & Needle Original, all-foam King 94 lb 43 kg Two people
Helix Elite, carton 1 of 2 Queen 104 lb 47 kg Two people
Helix Elite, carton 2 of 2 Queen 68 lb 31 kg Two people
Helix Elite, carton 1 of 2 King 130 lb 59 kg Two people, use a dolly
Canadian hybrid, typical band Queen 85 to 110 lb 39 to 50 kg Two people
Canadian all-foam, typical band Twin 45 to 60 lb 20 to 27 kg One person, carefully

Individual figures are published manufacturer shipping weights, compiled July 2026. Typical bands are compiled from published Canadian and North American manufacturer weights and are indicative, not a specification for any one product.

Here is the number that turns those weights into a decision. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety publishes the NIOSH load constant of 23 kg (about 51 pounds), described as a load considered safe under ideal conditions for 75 per cent of women and 90 per cent of men. Ideal conditions mean a compact object, held close to the body, lifted without twisting, at knuckle height. A 43-inch carton carried up a stairwell meets none of those conditions.

The practical translation: every boxed mattress size above a twin is over the single-lift threshold, and a twin is only just under it. Two people is the default, not the exception. If you are moving one alone, an appliance dolly or a furniture strap changes the task from a lift into a roll, which is the safer option by a wide margin.

How we know this: carton dimensions and individual shipping weights were compiled from manufacturer specifications and help centre pages in July 2026, with the Hamuq figures taken from Hamuq's own raw materials and packaging specifications. Lifting guidance is the NIOSH load constant as published by the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. Hamuq does not currently publish per-size box weights, so the Hamuq rows in this article give carton dimensions only, and the weight bands above are market figures rather than Hamuq measurements. Compiled by Jordan Bedwell, July 2026.

Will the box fit through your door and stairwell?

Yes, a mattress carton clears every standard Canadian doorway because, at 15 to 20 inches square, it is roughly half the width of a 30-inch interior door. The constraint is never width. It is the 43- to 47-inch length that has to swing through corners, and the weight that has to go up stairs. The table below is a checklist to run before delivery day.

Passage Typical Canadian dimension Carton needs Verdict
Interior bedroom door 30 in / 76 cm wide 20 in / 51 cm Clears easily
Exterior or apartment entry door 32 to 36 in / 81 to 91 cm 20 in / 51 cm Clears easily
Straight stair run 36 in / 91 cm wide 20 in / 51 cm plus a carrier Clears, but heavy
Stairwell with a 90 degree landing 36 in / 91 cm landing depth 47 in / 119 cm to pivot upright Tight, pivot the box on its end
Residential elevator Cab depth 48 in / 122 cm and up 47 in / 119 cm standing upright Clears standing on end
Basement hatch or crawl access Varies widely 47 in / 119 cm diagonal Measure before ordering

Dimensions reflect common Canadian residential construction. Carton needs to use the largest carton in the chart above, 47 in / 119 cm. Measure your own passages; older homes and converted units vary.

One genuinely useful trick for tight landings: stand the carton on its end and pivot it around the corner rather than carrying it flat. Upright, the box occupies only its 20-inch footprint on the floor, so a landing that will not take a 47-inch flat carry will usually take an upright pivot. This is the same reason a boxed mattress can be delivered to apartments that a traditional mattress cannot, and it is the entire point of the format. If you are moving an already-unboxed mattress instead, that is a different job, covered in our guide to re-boxing, folding and transporting a mattress.

Will the box fit in your car?

A mattress carton fits in most vehicles larger than a compact sedan and across the back seat of almost any four-door car. At 43 to 47 inches long, the box is shorter than the roughly 48 to 55-inch rear bench of a typical sedan, so laying it across the back seat works even when the trunk does not. This matters for warehouse pickups, store collections, and anyone taking delivery at one address and moving it to another.

Vehicle Trunk or cargo area, seats up Rear seats folded Back seat, laid across
Compact sedan No Yes Yes
Mid-size sedan Rarely, measure the opening Yes Yes
Hatchback Yes, standing or angled Yes Yes
Compact SUV or crossover Yes Yes Yes
Mid-size or full-size SUV Yes Yes Yes
Minivan Yes Yes Yes
Pickup truck bed Yes, secure it and cover it Not applicable Yes, in a crew cab

Based on a carton up to 20 in square by 47 in long (51 by 119 cm) against common Canadian vehicle cargo dimensions. Trunk openings vary far more than trunk volumes; measure the opening, not the cubic feet.

Two cautions. Keep the carton dry, because corrugated kraft loses structural strength quickly when wet and a soaked box can fail mid-carry. And do not leave a compressed mattress in a hot vehicle or an unheated garage for days; manufacturers generally recommend unboxing within a few weeks of delivery, and prolonged compression in extreme temperatures is the one storage condition that can affect how well the foam recovers.

How a full mattress gets that small

A mattress is compressed by pressing the air out under an industrial press, sealing it inside a vacuum-tight plastic sleeve, then folding and rolling it into the carton. The plastic holds the compression, not the box; the box is protection and a handle. That is why the mattress begins expanding within seconds of the plastic being cut, and why the plastic gauge matters more than the cardboard.

Hybrids compress less than all-foam mattresses because steel pocket coils have a hard floor on how far they will squash. An all-foam bed can lose 80 per cent of its height under pressure; a coil hybrid loses less, which is why hybrid cartons tend to be wider and heavier than foam cartons at the same mattress size. The trade-off runs the other way once the mattress is on the frame, where the coils give the support and airflow that foam cannot.

Expansion time is a separate topic with its own answer, and we cover it properly in our guide to how long a new mattress takes to expand and break in. The short version for planning purposes: the mattress is usually sleepable the first night and reaches full shape over the following days. If you notice a smell after unboxing, that is normal and temporary, and our explainer on new mattress smell and off-gassing covers what it is and how long it lasts.

The Hamuq carton, measured

Hamuq ships in an 18.5 by 18.5 by 43-inch (47 by 47 by 109 cm) mailer carton made from 100 per cent recycled-fibre corrugated kraft paper, manufactured in Canada, with the mattress sealed inside a 4 MIL polyethene compression sleeve. The same packaging specification covers both the Original Hybrid and the Organic Hybrid. These are the figures from Hamuq's own raw materials and packaging record, not an estimate.

Packaging component Material Specification Country of origin
Mailer carton 100 per cent paper, corrugated kraft, recycled fibre 18.5 x 18.5 x 43 in / 47 x 47 x 109 cm Canada
Compression sleeve 100 per cent polyethene (PE) 4 MIL gauge Canada

From the Hamuq raw materials and packaging specification for the Original Hybrid and the Organic Hybrid, verified July 2026. Identical packaging is listed for both models.

Two things follow from those numbers. The carton is recycled-fibre corrugated, so it goes in household paper recycling in every Canadian municipality that collects flattened corrugated cardboard. The compression sleeve is polyethene film, which most curbside programs do not take but many grocery-store film drop-offs do; check your municipality's film plastic rules rather than assuming. If you are also getting rid of an old mattress in the same week, our guide to disposing of or recycling an old mattress in Canada covers the province-by-province options.

Possible downside worth noting: Hamuq publishes carton dimensions but does not publish per-size box weights, so if you need an exact number for a freight booking or a building's service elevator rules, contact Hamuq support for your specific size rather than working from the market band in the weight table above.

Hamuq shipping times by province

Hamuq ships free across Canada, usually dispatching the next business day, with most provinces receiving delivery in two to five business days. The estimates below are Hamuq's own published courier performance figures, including the share of shipments that actually land in the stated window. They are estimates rather than guarantees, and remote postal codes, weather and peak season all move them.

Destination Typical transit Share arriving in that window
Ontario 2 to 3 days 95 per cent
Quebec 3 to 4 days 90 per cent
New Brunswick 3 to 4 days 80 per cent
Nova Scotia 3 to 4 days 80 per cent
Manitoba 4 to 5 days 80 per cent
Alberta 4 to 5 days 80 per cent
Saskatchewan 4 to 5 days 80 per cent
British Columbia 5 to 7 days 80 per cent
Canadian territories 7 to 10 days 80 per cent, charges may apply

Hamuq published shipping estimates, verified July 2026. Estimates only, not guarantees. Hamuq recommends keeping your current bed until the new mattress arrives.

Hamuq sizes and prices

Every Hamuq mattress ships compressed in the same Canadian-made carton, in six sizes for the Original Hybrid and five for the Organic Hybrid. Shipping and returns are free in both directions, so if the mattress does not work out, Hamuq sends a courier to collect it rather than asking you to re-box it yourself.

The Original Hybrid stands 12.5 inches tall with a 9-inch base of 1,200-plus double-tempered Canadian steel pocket coils forged in Toronto, over CertiPUR-US certified foams made in Ontario. Being a coil hybrid, it compresses less than an all-foam bed, which is why the carton is on the wider side of the market range. Possible downside: it comes in one firmness only, medium-firm at 6 out of 10, so check our guide for side sleepers if you want a plusher surface.

The Organic Hybrid ships in the same carton and is the firmer option at 7.5 out of 10, built with GOLS-certified Dunlop latex, a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover, a New Zealand wool fire barrier instead of fibreglass, and more than 2,700 coils. Possible downside: latex is denser than polyurethane foam, so the boxed weight will sit at the heavy end of the band for its size, and it is not offered in a California king.

To be fair to the competition on the thing this page is about: Endy publishes its exact carton dimensions in its help centre and confirms one box size across every mattress size, which is clearer than what Hamuq currently publishes. Douglas sells an all-foam queen at $799 CAD with a 365-night trial, and an all-foam mattress ships lighter than a coil hybrid, so if getting the box upstairs alone is your main worry, foam is genuinely the easier delivery. Hamuq's case is the coil build and Canadian manufacturing, not the shipping weight.

One Canadian-made box, free both ways

The Original Hybrid starts at $799 CAD and the Organic Hybrid at $1,549 CAD. Both ship free across Canada in a recycled-fibre carton made in Canada, with a 120-night risk-free trial, free courier pickup, a full refund, and a 15-year warranty.

What to do the day it arrives

Move the sealed carton to the room it will live in before you cut anything, because a boxed mattress is far easier to move than a loose one. Once the plastic is open the mattress begins expanding immediately and gets awkward within minutes. Everything after that is straightforward.

Get the box to the bedroom first. Two people, or one person with a dolly. Stand it on its end to pivot around tight landings.
Have your frame ready before you cut. Check slat spacing and support first; our guide to bed frame requirements for a hybrid covers what a warranty needs, and whether you still need a box spring.
Cut the plastic on the frame, not on the floor. Position the roll on the base, unroll it, then cut the inner sleeve. A shallow cut with a box cutter or scissors; deep cuts reach the mattress cover.
Flatten the carton, air the room. Corrugated kraft goes in paper recycling, flattened. Open a window for a few hours if you notice a new-product smell.

Frequently asked questions

What are the dimensions of a mattress in a box?

A mattress in a box measures roughly 15 to 20 inches square by 43 to 47 inches tall (38 to 51 cm square by 109 to 119 cm tall). Hamuq ships in an 18.5 by 18.5 by 43-inch carton and Endy in an 18 by 18 by 44-inch carton. Most brands use one carton size for every mattress size, because the mattress is folded before rolling.

How big is the box for a queen mattress?

A queen mattress box is typically 16 to 19 inches square and 43 to 47 inches tall (41 to 48 cm square by 109 to 119 cm tall). A coil hybrid produces a wider roll than an all-foam mattress at the same size, so hybrid cartons sit at the upper end of that range. The carton is usually identical to the one used for a king.

How much does a mattress in a box weigh?

A boxed queen weighs roughly 70 to 110 pounds (32 to 50 kg) and a boxed king roughly 90 to 140 pounds (41 to 64 kg), with all-foam models lighter than coil hybrids. That is well above the 23 kg single-person lift limit used by Canadian safety guidance, so plan on two people or an appliance dolly for anything larger than a twin.

Can one person carry a mattress in a box?

One person can manage a twin box, but every larger size exceeds safe single-lift guidance. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety cites 23 kg, about 51 pounds, as the load constant for ideal conditions, and carrying a 43-inch carton up stairs is not ideal conditions. Use a second person or a dolly.

Will a mattress box fit through a standard door?

Yes. At 15 to 20 inches square, a mattress carton is roughly half the width of a standard 30 inch (76 cm) Canadian interior door. Width is never the constraint. The tight spot is a stairwell landing, where the 43 to 47 inch length has to pivot; standing the box on its end solves almost every one of those corners.

Will a mattress in a box fit in my car?

It fits in most vehicles larger than a compact sedan, and it fits across the back seat of nearly any four-door car. At 43 to 47 inches long, the carton is shorter than a typical 48- to 55-inch rear bench. A sedan trunk usually will not take it with the seats up, but folding the rear seats down solves that.

Does a hybrid mattress ship in a bigger box than a foam mattress?

Usually yes. Steel pocket coils will only compress so far, so a hybrid produces a fatter roll and a wider, heavier carton than an all-foam mattress of the same size. Mattress thickness matters too: a 13-inch hybrid ships in a bigger box than a 10-inch one. Carton height stays about the same because it is set by the folded mattress width.

Final word

Plan for a carton about 18 inches square and 43 to 47 inches long, weighing more than one person should lift, and the rest of delivery day takes care of itself. Measure your tightest landing, line up a second pair of hands, and get the sealed box into the bedroom before anything gets cut. Hamuq's Original Hybrid starts at $799 CAD and the Organic Hybrid at $1,549 CAD, both shipped free across Canada in a Canadian-made carton with free return pickup if it is not right.
