A compressed mattress arrives in a carton roughly the size of a bar fridge stood on end, and the question behind every search for its dimensions is the same: will it get from the courier's hands to your bedroom? This page provides the actual published carton specs from Hamuq and four other manufacturers, the weight band you should plan for, and the doorway, stairwell, and vehicle clearances that actually determine the answer. Mattress in a box dimensions by brand

Mattress cartons cluster tightly between 15 and 20 inches square and 43 to 47 inches tall, because the roll diameter is set by mattress thickness and the carton height is set by the folded mattress width. That is why most brands ship a twin and a king in an identically sized box: the mattress is folded in half lengthwise before rolling, so a 76-inch king and a 38-inch twin both become a roll about 38 to 40 inches long. What changes between sizes is the density of the roll and therefore the weight, not the carton.

Two patterns are worth noting before you measure anything. First, a taller mattress produces a fatter roll, so a 13- or 14-inch hybrid ships in a wider carton than a 10-inch all-foam bed at the same mattress size. Second, some premium hybrids ship in two cartons rather than one, which is heavier overall but far easier to carry because no single box exceeds a comfortable two-person lift.

How much does a mattress in a box weigh?

A boxed queen mattress typically weighs 70 to 110 pounds (32 to 50 kg), with all-foam models at the light end and coil hybrids at the heavy end. A boxed king runs 90 to 140 pounds (41 to 64 kg). The carton itself adds only a few pounds, so almost all of the weight is mattress. Published manufacturer figures give a clear picture of the real spread.

Here is the number that turns those weights into a decision. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety publishes the NIOSH load constant of 23 kg (about 51 pounds), described as a load considered safe under ideal conditions for 75 per cent of women and 90 per cent of men. Ideal conditions mean a compact object, held close to the body, lifted without twisting, at knuckle height. A 43-inch carton carried up a stairwell meets none of those conditions.

The practical translation: every boxed mattress size above a twin is over the single-lift threshold, and a twin is only just under it. Two people is the default, not the exception. If you are moving one alone, an appliance dolly or a furniture strap changes the task from a lift into a roll, which is the safer option by a wide margin.

Will the box fit through your door and stairwell?

Yes, a mattress carton clears every standard Canadian doorway because, at 15 to 20 inches square, it is roughly half the width of a 30-inch interior door. The constraint is never width. It is the 43- to 47-inch length that has to swing through corners, and the weight that has to go up stairs. The table below is a checklist to run before delivery day.

Dimensions reflect common Canadian residential construction. Carton needs to use the largest carton in the chart above, 47 in / 119 cm. Measure your own passages; older homes and converted units vary.

One genuinely useful trick for tight landings: stand the carton on its end and pivot it around the corner rather than carrying it flat. Upright, the box occupies only its 20-inch footprint on the floor, so a landing that will not take a 47-inch flat carry will usually take an upright pivot. This is the same reason a boxed mattress can be delivered to apartments that a traditional mattress cannot, and it is the entire point of the format. Will the box fit in your car?

A mattress carton fits in most vehicles larger than a compact sedan and across the back seat of almost any four-door car. At 43 to 47 inches long, the box is shorter than the roughly 48 to 55-inch rear bench of a typical sedan, so laying it across the back seat works even when the trunk does not. This matters for warehouse pickups, store collections, and anyone taking delivery at one address and moving it to another.

Two cautions. Keep the carton dry, because corrugated kraft loses structural strength quickly when wet and a soaked box can fail mid-carry. And do not leave a compressed mattress in a hot vehicle or an unheated garage for days; manufacturers generally recommend unboxing within a few weeks of delivery, and prolonged compression in extreme temperatures is the one storage condition that can affect how well the foam recovers.

How a full mattress gets that small

A mattress is compressed by pressing the air out under an industrial press, sealing it inside a vacuum-tight plastic sleeve, then folding and rolling it into the carton. The plastic holds the compression, not the box; the box is protection and a handle. That is why the mattress begins expanding within seconds of the plastic being cut, and why the plastic gauge matters more than the cardboard.

Hybrids compress less than all-foam mattresses because steel pocket coils have a hard floor on how far they will squash. An all-foam bed can lose 80 per cent of its height under pressure; a coil hybrid loses less, which is why hybrid cartons tend to be wider and heavier than foam cartons at the same mattress size. The trade-off runs the other way once the mattress is on the frame, where the coils give the support and airflow that foam cannot.

Two things follow from those numbers. The carton is recycled-fibre corrugated, so it goes in household paper recycling in every Canadian municipality that collects flattened corrugated cardboard. The compression sleeve is polyethene film, which most curbside programs do not take but many grocery-store film drop-offs do; check your municipality's film plastic rules rather than assuming. The Original Hybrid stands 12.5 inches tall with a 9-inch base of 1,200-plus double-tempered Canadian steel pocket coils forged in Toronto, over CertiPUR-US certified foams made in Ontario. Being a coil hybrid, it compresses less than an all-foam bed, which is why the carton is on the wider side of the market range. The Organic Hybrid ships in the same carton and is the firmer option at 7.5 out of 10, built with GOLS-certified Dunlop latex, a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover, a New Zealand wool fire barrier instead of fibreglass, and more than 2,700 coils. Possible downside: latex is denser than polyurethane foam, so the boxed weight will sit at the heavy end of the band for its size, and it is not offered in a California king.

To be fair to the competition on the thing this page is about: Endy publishes its exact carton dimensions in its help centre and confirms one box size across every mattress size, which is clearer than what Hamuq currently publishes. Douglas sells an all-foam queen at $799 CAD with a 365-night trial, and an all-foam mattress ships lighter than a coil hybrid, so if getting the box upstairs alone is your main worry, foam is genuinely the easier delivery. Hamuq's case is the coil build and Canadian manufacturing, not the shipping weight.

What to do the day it arrives

Move the sealed carton to the room it will live in before you cut anything, because a boxed mattress is far easier to move than a loose one. Once the plastic is open the mattress begins expanding immediately and gets awkward within minutes. Everything after that is straightforward.
