How do you find out what is squeaking, step by step?
Casper and Saatva both say to check the mattress, box spring and frame separately and to press on different spots until you hear it. The order below is our own, arranged so the first step rules out the most.
- Floor test the mattress. Take the mattress off and lie on it on the floor. Roll, sit and press in the spots where you hear the noise. Silence means the mattress is not the source; skip to step 3. Noise means step 2.
- Locate it within the mattress. Press slowly across the surface. A noise tied to one spot inside the mattress, still present on the floor, is the case to report to the seller.
- Test the foundation or box spring alone. If you use one, set it on the floor and press across it. Casper names a box spring's wooden frame as a common source.
- Test the slats. With the mattress off, press each slat and listen for rubbing or clicking where slats meet the rails.

- Check the centre support and the floor. Make sure a centre leg is touching the floor, and move the bed slightly to see whether the sound follows the bed or stays with the floor.
