Douglas Mattress Review (2026): Original vs Summit, and the 365 Night Trial

Douglas sells three foam mattresses and three hybrids, and names them the same way: Original, Alpine and Summit. Each step up adds an inch of height and a thicker cooling gel comfort layer. The hybrid versions sit 2 in taller than their foam namesakes because the coil unit replaces the foam base. Every figure below was read from the model's product page on douglas.ca on September 11, 2026.

On the three foam pages, the per-size weights and dimensions in the product data were identical across the Original, Alpine and Summit, including a 10 in height for the 12 in Summit. Because that cannot be right for all three, this guide quotes the heights from each page's written description and marks the foam weights as not clearly published rather than repeating a figure that appears to have been copied between products.

All six are described by Douglas as medium-firm, and none is offered in a choice of firmness. The Summit Hybrid is the only one Douglas describes differently, as medium-firm with a plusher top, and it is the model Douglas points side sleepers toward.

Douglas Original vs Summit: what the extra $500 buys

The gap between the Original and the Summit is the same $500 in queen whether you buy foam or hybrid, so the useful question is what that money changes in the mattress. On Douglas's own descriptions, it changes four things and leaves the rest alone.

What does not change is as telling as what does. The coil count, coil height and zoning are the same in both hybrids; the trial, the warranty, the delivery terms and the firmness label are the same across all four. So the $500 is buying comfort-layer depth and cooling, not a different support system. That is a good trade for a side sleeper whose shoulder and hip want more cushion, or for someone who sleeps hot, and a poor one for a back or stomach sleeper who is happy on a medium-firm surface already.

The Alpine sits between the two at $999 CAD in queen foam and $1,149 CAD in hybrid. It gets the Polar temperature balancing and a 2.25 in comfort layer but keeps the standard cover, which makes it the model to look at if you want some of the Summit's cooling without the full $500 step.

Two patterns are worth knowing before you compare anything else. A hybrid is exactly $150 more than its foam namesake at every single-mattress size, and king and California king are priced the same across the whole range. Foam or hybrid Douglas: which one?

Douglas's own descriptions draw the line clearly. The foam models are sold on motion isolation and pressure relief, with a high-density foam base that Douglas says absorbs movement before it crosses the bed. The hybrids replace that base with 8 in Exoforge pocketed coils zoned in three areas, firmer under the hips, with a foam encasement around the edge, and Douglas describes them as having stronger edges and a more responsive feel than all-foam.

• Choose foam if you share the bed with a restless sleeper, sleep on your side or back at an average weight, and want the lowest price in the range. The Original foam at $799 CAD in queen is the cheapest way into Douglas.
• Choose hybrid if you sit on the edge of the bed often, sleep hot, weigh more than average, or prefer a bouncier surface that is easier to move on. The extra $150 buys a coil core and reinforced edges.

The Douglas 365-night trial, clause by clause

The trial is the most-advertised part of Douglas, and it is genuinely long. It also has conditions that are easy to miss in the headline. Everything in the table below is quoted or closely paraphrased from the Douglas sleep trial and return policy pages read on September 11, 2026, beside Hamuq's own terms for comparison.

Two of those rows deserve a second look. The household rule means that if anyone at your address has already returned a Juno, a Logan and Cove, an Octave or an earlier Douglas, you may not have a trial to use, and it is worth asking before you order. The Douglas warranty: two documents, two thresholds

Every Douglas mattress carries a 15-year warranty, and the part of any mattress warranty that matters most is the indentation threshold: how deep a body impression has to be before it counts as a defect. Which document applies to a given Douglas purchase is something to confirm with Douglas at the time you buy, and to keep in writing with your receipt. Douglas lists four compatible bases on its hybrid pages: a box foundation made for foam, latex or hybrid mattresses; a platform with a solid, flat wood surface; a non-medical adjustable base; or slats at least 2 in wide, 3 in apart or less, with at least one centre beam for larger beds. Douglas also warns that a base that flexes can make the mattress feel softer than it should and can cause sagging.

Where Douglas is the better buy, and where it is not

Douglas has real advantages and this guide should say so plainly. Its trial is three times the length of Hamuq's. Its cheapest queen is $799 CAD in foam against $999 CAD for the Hamuq Original Hybrid. It publishes coil counts, heights and layer thicknesses for every model, and its base requirements are clear. If you want an all-foam mattress, Hamuq does not make one and Douglas makes three.

Where the comparison narrows is in the hybrid tier. The Douglas Original Hybrid queen at $949 CAD weighs 91 lb and the Hamuq Original Hybrid queen at $999 CAD weighs 89 lb (91 lb boxed); both are medium-firm, and both carry a 15-year warranty. Hamuq publishes a 9 in coil unit of individually wrapped steel pocket coils with no foam encasement, under a 2 in Cloud Tech comfort layer and a zoned 0.5 in gel layer; Douglas publishes an 8 in, 3-zone coil unit with foam edge encasement.
