What is a mattress protector, a mattress pad and a mattress topper?

Mattress protector

A thin cover that goes on before your fitted sheet. Most are fitted like a sheet; some are full encasements that zip around all six sides. The job is defence: sweat, spills, body oils and dust. A protector should be almost unnoticeable when you lie down. If you can feel a protector changing the firmness of the bed, it is thicker than it needs to be.

Two features vary a lot and are worth checking before you buy. The first is whether it is waterproof or merely stain resistant, which are not the same claim. The second is whether it is machine washable and at what temperature, because a protector you cannot wash easily is a protector you will stop using.

Mattress pad

A quilted layer, typically about an inch thick, that sits on the mattress like a fitted sheet. It adds mild cushioning and some protection. Pads are the compromise option, and they are most useful in guest rooms and rentals where you want a bed to feel a bit softer and stay a bit cleaner without spending much.

A pad will not rescue a mattress that is genuinely the wrong firmness. An inch of quilting does not change the support underneath it.

Mattress topper

A thick layer of foam, latex, wool or fibre, commonly two to three inches, laid on top of the mattress to change how it feels. This is the only one of the three intended to alter comfort in a meaningful way. Toppers soften a bed that is too firm reasonably well. They are much weaker at firming up a bed that is too soft, because you are still lying on the soft support underneath.

Mattress pad vs protector: which one do you need?

This is the pair people confuse most, because both go on like a fitted sheet and both are sold next to each other. The difference is priority. A protector is built to keep things out of the mattress and to stay thin. A pad is built to add a little softness, and any protection it gives is a side effect of its fabric and fill.

• Choose a protector if the mattress is new, in its trial, under warranty, or if spills and sweat are the concern. It keeps the bed feeling the way you chose it.
• Choose a pad if the mattress is older, the feel is slightly too firm, and liquid protection matters less, for example in a guest room.
• Use both if you want a pad's softness on a bed you also need to protect: protector on the mattress, pad on top, or a pad that the seller clearly describes as waterproof.

Labels are not standardised, so a product called a "pad" can be a thin protector and a "protector" can be quilted. Judge by the stated thickness, the fill and whether the description says waterproof, not by the name.

How do a protector, pad and topper compare side by side?

The height row catches people out. A three-inch topper on a twelve-inch mattress, such as the 12-inch Hamuq Original Hybrid, gives you a fifteen-inch stack, which many standard fitted sheets will not hold, and which also raises the height you sit on getting in and out of bed.

How does a protector affect your sleep trial and warranty?

Mattresses in Canada are usually sold with two separate promises, and the fine print of both can turn on whether the mattress was kept clean.

The sleep trial. Trials let you return the mattress inside a set window, but many require the mattress to come back in a condition a charity can accept. A stained mattress may not be donatable, which can mean it cannot be returned either. Hamuq's return policy states that the product must be in donatable condition to be eligible for a return, inside a 120-night trial with at least 30 nights of use first.

The warranty. Warranties cover defects and indentation beyond a stated depth. They exclude damage you caused. Hamuq's warranty lists physical abuse or damage to the structure or cover material, including burns, cuts, tears, liquid damage and stains, among what it does not cover. Its covered defect for sagging is a visible indentation greater than one inch that is not the result of an improper or unsupportive foundation.

This is why the order of purchase matters. A protector bought with the mattress protects the trial period. A protector bought three months later protects nothing that has already happened. Which one do you actually need?

• You just bought a mattress: a protector, fitted before the first night. Nothing else, yet. New foam and coils settle, so give the mattress time before deciding it needs changing. Our mattress break-in guide covers what changes and when.
• The bed is too firm and it has been more than a month: a topper is the honest option, but read how to soften a new hybrid without returning it first, because several cheaper fixes come before buying three inches of foam. • Children, pets, or anyone managing incontinence: a protector whose description explicitly says waterproof, not one that only says stain resistant. Check the wording rather than assuming.
• A guest room used a few times a year: a pad is a reasonable single purchase, adding a little comfort and a little protection for a bed nobody sleeps on often.

What order do the layers go on?

From the mattress up: mattress, topper (if any), protector, then fitted sheet. Putting the protector over the topper means it defends both layers, and the topper is the harder of the two to clean. Some people add a second protector directly on the mattress as well. If you use a pad instead of a topper, the protector usually goes under the pad on a new mattress, so the mattress itself is covered first.

Check that the fitted sheet's pocket depth covers the combined height, and that the protector's skirt is deep enough to grip the mattress plus topper.

What will a mattress protector not fix?

Four honest limits, because protectors are often oversold.

Structure. A protector does not make a mattress last longer in a structural sense. Sagging comes from the materials giving way under load and from an unsupportive base underneath. A cover on top changes none of that. Our guide to what bed frame a hybrid mattress needs covers the part that does.

Allergies. Some protectors are sold as allergy covers, but the evidence for covers as a treatment is mixed. A Cochrane review of 54 trials concluded that chemical and physical methods to reduce house dust mite exposure, which include mattress covers, cannot be recommended for asthma. A 2017 randomized trial in 284 mite-sensitized children with asthma found that mite-impermeable encasings reduced hospital visits for asthma attacks, though not the number of children needing oral steroids. Those studies tested full encasements, not ordinary fitted protectors. If allergies or asthma are the reason you are shopping, talk to a doctor.

Time off the bed. A protector only works while it is on. The most common failure is taking it off to wash it and not putting it back the same day.

What Hamuq sells, and what it does not

Hamuq sells a Mattress Protector, described on its product page as a super soft, stain resistant mattress protector. It is priced at $79 in Twin, $89 in Twin XL, $99 in Full, $109 in Queen and $119 in King (CAD, read September 25, 2026). Hamuq's FAQ says that using a mattress protector is recommended to help protect your mattress from spills, stains and other damage. The protector has its own 1-year limited warranty, which, like the mattress warranty, excludes liquid damage and stains.

Read that description carefully. The product description says stain resistant. If your reason for buying is a child, a pet or incontinence, ask Hamuq at info@hamuq.com whether this protector blocks liquids before relying on it for that purpose.

Hamuq does not sell a mattress topper or a mattress pad. If a topper or pad is what you need, you will be buying it elsewhere, and that is worth saying plainly on a page that compares all three.
