The twelve answers that decide whether an online mattress is a good buy: real prices, who owns the brand, trial conditions, warranty rules, and what the seller will not publish. With Hamuq's own answers quoted so you can see a complete set.

What should you ask before buying a mattress online in Canada?
Quick answer: Get twelve answers in writing before you check out: the regular price and whether the sale is real, who owns the brand, what is inside each layer, the firmness on the seller's own scale, the trial length and its minimum nights, the return conditions and who collects it, the warranty's sag threshold and base rules, what the bed needs underneath it, delivery time to your province, what happens if you return one item from a bundle, whether certifications are for the material or the brand, and what the seller does not publish.
A seller who answers all twelve on the page is describing a real product. Hamuq's answers are quoted below from its product and policy pages, including the two things it does not publish. Start with Hamuq's return policy if the trial is your main question.
1. What is the regular price, and is the sale real?
Canada's Competition Bureau expects a "regular price" claim to pass one of two tests: more than half of sales were at that price or higher within a reasonable period, usually a year, or the product was offered at that price or higher in good faith for a substantial period. A mattress that is discounted every week is priced at its sale price. Compare what you will actually pay today across brands.

2. Who owns the brand?
Several Canadian brands that look independent share two owners, and so do several of the review sites that rank them. Knowing this explains why "best of" lists disagree. Our ownership map of Canada's mattress brands is the reference.

3. What is inside, layer by layer?
Ask for the thickness and material of every layer, the coil type and gauge, and the cover fabric. Vague words such as "premium foam" are a price, not a spec.
Hamuq: the Original Hybrid page lists a 1-inch quilted pillow top, 2 inches of comfort foam, a half-inch gel foam layer across the middle third, and a 9-inch base of individually wrapped pocket coils with no foam encasement. The Organic Hybrid has 2 inches of natural Dunlop latex, a micro coil layer, a pocket coil base and an organic cotton cover.
4. How firm is it on your own scale?
Firmness scales are not standardised. Ask for the brand's number and its word, then compare with a bed you know. Our firmness chart gives ranges by position and weight.

5. How long is the trial, and how many nights must I keep it first?

6. What condition does it have to be in, and who collects it?
Stains void most trials. Some brands collect; some ask you to donate it yourself and send proof; some charge for pickup.

7. What does the warranty cover, and at what sag depth?
Mattress warranties mostly cover sagging beyond a stated depth, not comfort. Thresholds of 1 inch and 1.5 inches both exist, and every warranty excludes sag caused by an unsupportive base. Our warranty guide explains the claim process.

8. What does it need underneath it?
Ask for the base requirement in the warranty's words, and check your frame's slat spacing and centre support before the box arrives. Our guide to what bed frame a hybrid needs covers the checks.
Hamuq: the warranty asks for a firm, solid surface on a base structurally able to carry the mattress and its users. The FAQ lists a regular box spring, slatted frame, platform bed or adjustable bed as compatible.
9. How long will delivery take to my province?
"Fast shipping" is not a number. Ask for the estimate to your province and whether it is a guarantee.

The product page's regional table estimates Ontario 2 to 3 days, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia 3 to 4, Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan 4 to 5, British Columbia 5 to 7, and the Canadian Territories 7 to 10 with possible charges, and states that the estimates are not guarantees.
10. What happens if I return one item from a bundle?
Free pillows and sheets are common. Ask what happens to the free items and to your refund if you return the mattress.

11. Are the certifications for the material or the brand?
GOLS covers latex, GOTS covers textiles, and CertiPUR-US covers foam. Each is issued to a producer of that material, not to the finished mattress, unless the brand holds its own licence. 12. What do you not publish?
This is the question that separates a transparent seller from a slick one. Every brand leaves something out. A brand that tells you what, and why, is easier to trust.

Nothing is withheld, but you may need both pages to answer a single question, which is worth knowing before you compare one brand against another.
