What Is Inside a Mattress in Canada (2026): Every Layer, Weight and Where It Comes From

What four Canadian sellers actually publish about what is inside

Every mattress brand sold in Canada publishes a layer diagram. That is not the same as publishing what is in the mattress. On September 19, 2026 we read the product pages of Endy, Douglas and Silk and Snow, and set them beside the bill of materials Hamuq keeps for its two mattresses. The question was narrow: does the seller give you a density number, a fabric weight, a coil wire thickness, or a country of origin for any individual component.

Three of the four describe their foam with an adjective. Silk and Snow calls its pressure relief layer a "2 in layer of cooling-gel infused high-density memory foam" and its transition layer "2 in of high-density polyurethane foam", without saying what density means in pounds. Endy names five layers, including an AirDrift cooling cover and a pressure relief foam with HeatDiffuse gel, and publishes no density for any of them. Douglas describes three premium foam layers and a CoolSense cover containing Infinitex fibres. None of the three gives a number you can compare.

This is not an accusation of hiding anything. It is the normal standard of disclosure in the category, and it is why shoppers compare on price and on trial length instead of on build. The rest of this guide is the other side of that: the full list, with numbers.

Inside the Hamuq Original Hybrid, component by component

The Original Hybrid is a 12 in hybrid that sells for $999 CAD in queen and $799 CAD in twin. It is built from 17 separate components. Nine of them are things a buyer would never see on a product page: the backing fabric, the border fill, the thread, the tape, the press label, the stitch bond and the adhesive. They are listed here in the same order the factory builds them.

Two rows are worth pausing on. The coil base is the one component Hamuq describes in the most detail on its own product page: 100 per cent Canadian double tempered steel, forged in small batches in Toronto by the Salwan family, in a mix of 15 and 12 gauge wire. Thicker 12 gauge wire is what gives an edge its resistance when you sit on it, and the lighter 15 gauge wire is what lets the sleeping surface flex. The other is the adhesive, which is water based rather than solvent based. That is a formulation choice that affects what a new mattress smells like in the first week, and it is covered in new mattress smell and off-gassing.

Inside the Hamuq Organic Hybrid

The Organic Hybrid is the $1,999 CAD queen. It is built from 18 components and it is a genuinely different mattress, not the same build with a different cover. The comfort layer is latex rather than polyurethane foam, there is a wool layer instead of a synthetic quilting fibre, and the support core is an 8 in pocket coil unit with a 1 in mini coil layer above it. The wool layer is the one people ask about. Wool is naturally flame resistant, which is why an organic build can use it in place of a chemical flame barrier. Note that this particular layer is 80 per cent wool and 20 per cent polyester, and it is the only component in either mattress that comes from New Zealand fibre processed in Canada. The thread, tape and stitch bond in the Organic are conventional polyester, exactly as they are in the Original.

What foam density actually means, and the numbers

Foam density is weight per cubic foot, written in pounds. It is not firmness. A 2.1 lb foam is not harder than a 1.0 lb foam; it has more material in the same space, which is why it resists a permanent body impression for longer. This is the single most useful number on a spec sheet and the one most often replaced by the word "high density".

Read the table the way a buyer should. The lowest density number in the Original Hybrid, 1.0 lb, is in the border fill, which is the part of the mattress nobody sleeps on. The two layers that carry body weight are 1.8 lb and 2.1 lb. If a seller gives you one density for a whole mattress, ask which layer it refers to, because the answer is usually the best one.

Latex does not use the same scale. D65 refers to a hardness measurement, not a weight per cubic foot, so the latex row cannot be compared with the foam rows and this guide does not try. Where the parts come from, counted

Hamuq states that both mattresses are made in Canada, and both bills of materials list Canada as the origin of several components. Those are two different claims. The first describes where the mattress is assembled. The second describes where individual parts come from, and the parts come from four countries.

The result is the opposite of what most buyers assume. The cheaper Original Hybrid has more Canadian components than the Organic Hybrid does, because its foams are poured in Canada while the Organic's cotton, wool batting and latex all come from Sri Lanka. Both coil bases are Canadian. Paying more for the organic build buys different materials, not more Canadian content.

What this list does not prove, and where other sellers are stronger

A bill of materials is a description of a build. It is not a test result, and it is not a guarantee about how a mattress will feel. Four honest limits apply to everything above.

Density predicts durability, it does not promise it. A 1.8 lb foam layer is more resistant to permanent impressions than a 1.0 lb one, all else equal. All else is rarely equal. Nothing in this table tells you how the mattress will look after five years, which is what the warranty is for, and the warranty threshold is the number to read: Hamuq covers indentations over 1 in for 15 years.

A longer component list is not a better mattress. The Original Hybrid has 17 components and the Organic has 18. That difference means nothing on its own.

Other sellers beat Hamuq on things this page does not measure. Endy publishes a 365 night trial and Douglas publishes 365 nights, against Hamuq's 120. Endy has physical stores in Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, Halifax and Winnipeg where you can lie on the mattress before buying, which no amount of disclosure replaces. If trying before buying matters more to you than knowing the wire gauge, that is a reasonable way to choose and Endy is the better route.

Disclosure is not certification. Hamuq publishing its own bill of materials is Hamuq describing its own product. It is not an audit, and it is not a third party verifying anything. Treat it as a starting point for questions to ask every seller, including this one.
